Kokomo is a welcoming community.

In 2016, Kokomo’s Common Council enacted legislation that protects lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender citizens from various forms of discrimination. The local ordinance gives affected residents protections in the areas of housing, financial institutions, employment, labor organizations, public accommodations and education.

The LGBT community has a strong presence in Kokomo, with the Kokomo Pride group forming in 2013 and Kokomo Pride Youth Group forming a year later.

Both groups aim to give people a sense of community and support. The youth group hosts a monthly family event which offers support, answers questions and gives members and guests a chance to meet other LBGT families. The youth group allows members as young as 10 to join.

Each year, the two groups host Diversity in the Park, a Kokomo LGBT Pride event and fundraiser, and set up a booth at Indy Pride as well.
